Walks and bike rides

Explore a variety of walks and bike trails through Sherwood Forest and nearby Clumber Park and Rufford Abbey Country Park.

As you head through Sherwood Forest you can imagine following in the footsteps of Robin Hood and his band of outlaws, finally arriving at The Major Oak, a very real tree which is said to be 1,000 years old and a hiding place for the merry men.

Pretty Clumber Park has miles of cycle routes around a peaceful serpentine lake, a proud chapel and exotic gardens. Surprising highlights include the world’s longest double avenue of lime trees and a walled kitchen garden that produces fresh seasonal ingredients for the park’s restaurant.

Rufford Abbey Country Park is set in 150 acres of parkland, woodland and gardens with woodland walks, a sculpture trail and children’s play village to explore.

Water sports

With some of the UK’s best white and flat water, the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham is an absolute treat for fans of water skiing, white water rafting, sailing, canoeing and a host of other water-based activities.

The centre is only 10 miles from The Sherwood Hideaway and has courses for all skill levels. Book in advance.

Horse riding

One of the most memorable ways of exploring Sherwood Forest and the surrounding area is by horseback, with a friendly equestrian centre minutes from The Sherwood Hideaway providing lessons and rides. Booking is essential, contact Wellow Park Stables (01623 861 040).

Swing through the tree tops
